More experienced employees suffer less workplace stress than their younger colleagues, a new study has found.
A study of 1,544 participants by researchers at the University of Michigan looked at the number and frequency of different kind of stress factors on workers aged 53 to 85, working at least 20 hours per week.
Some 47 per cent of people said that time pressures were a source of workplace stress, however 19 per cent of older workers believed they had poor job security, something that researcher Gwenith Fisher said was surprising.
"Given what we know about the extent of age discrimination at work and the current economic climate regarding unemployment, this is a surprisingly low number," she said.
She went on to say that many older people are 'empty nesters' and therefore do not share the same work-personal conflicts of their younger colleagues "juggling responsibilities to children along with their jobs and their personal needs".
The results of the survey come as the number of middle-aged and older workers is expected to increase above the number of younger workers by the year 2010.
